چکیده

This is a review of the experimental data concerning the spectrum, arrival distribution and composition of cosmic rays with energies ≥ 10 eV. Before the experimental review I briefly discuss the conditions for the production followed by a review of the propagation of cosmic rays. Then follows a discussion of the properties of the showers produced by the primary cosmic ray particles and a description of the techniques used to detect the showers and extract the energy, direction and nature of the primary. The main conclusion of the experimental review is that there is still insufficient data to answer all the questions concerning the particles which strike the earth with such enormous energies. There has been significent progress which I will discuss and there are good prospects that in the next five years we will come much closer to the answers. Much more can be learned from existing data but a more sophisticated and disciplined analysis will be required.

TeV black hole fragmentation and detectability in extensive air showers

In models with large extra dimensions, particle collisions with center-of-mass energy larger than the fundamental gravitational scale can generate nonperturbative gravitational objects. Since cosmic rays have been observed with energies above 108 TeV, gravitational effects in the TeV energy range can, in principle, be observed by ultrahigh energy cosmic ray detectors. We consider the interactio...

Simulations of black hole air showers in cosmic ray detectors

We present a comprehensive study of TeV black hole events in Earth’s atmosphere originated by cosmic rays of very high energy. An advanced fortran Monte Carlo code is developed and used to simulate black hole extensive air showers from ultrahigh-energy neutrino-nucleon interactions. We investigate the characteristics of these events, compare the black hole air showers to standard model air show...

Searching for Extra Dimensions in High Energy Cosmic Rays

We present a study of the decay of an intermediate mini black hole at the first impact of a cosmic ray particle with the atmosphere, in the context of D-brane world scenarios with TeV scale gravity and large extra dimensions. We model the decay of the black hole using the semiclassical approximation and include the corrections coming from energy loss into the bulk. Extensive simulations show th...

Collider versus Cosmic Ray Sensitivity to Black Hole Production

In scenarios with extra dimensions and TeV-scale quantum gravity, black holes are expected to be produced copiously at center-of-mass energies above the fundamental Planck scale. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) may thus turn into a factory of black holes, at which their production and evaporation may be studied in detail. But even before the LHC starts operating, the Pierre Auger Observatory fo...

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...
